The 10 Best Burgers in Chicago

Top Notch Beefburgers.  2116 W 95th Street, Beverly, Chicago.  Forget the new wave of fancy $10 burger joints, Top Notch Beefburgers has been open for 70 plus years serving a classic diner burger cooked to medium rare.  Prices range from $4 for the quarter pound burger to $7 for the 3/4 pound double cheese burger.  They also have a large list of specialty burgers too.  Top Notch Beefburgers is classic old school burger joint in Chicago with a nostalgic diner interior that looks like it hasn’t changed since the 50s.

Abigail’s American Bistro.  493 Roger Williams Avenue, Highland Park.  Abigail’s American Bistro is on the of the best restaurants in the burbs and lists one burger on their menu simply labeled burger.  The burger, cooked to order, is topped with Wisconsin sharp cheddar cheese, red onion marmalade which really makes this Chicago burger a standout, and served with a side of fries.

Billy Goat Tavern & Grill.  430 N Michigan Ave, Chicago.  Billy Goat Tavern is another old school Chicago burger joint with a rich history next to the Chicago Stadium, now the United Center, that has been serving their famous burger since 1934.  Burgers are served as singles, doubles, and triples.  Billy Goat Tavern was originally called the Lincoln Tavern but the name was changed when a billy goat wandered in one day after falling off a truck and was adopted by owner, William Sianis.  Legend has it the billy goat was denied entry to a Chicago Cubs during a World Series game.  Sianis said “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field.” starting a curse where the Cubs lost the 1945 World Series, went into a slump, and never won a pennant or World Series again.  Skip the other Billy Goat restaurants, the original is the one to eat in.  Unique to any burger joint I have ever eaten, they do not sell fries as a side, just chips.

Paradise Pup.  1724 S River Road, Des Plaines.  Another excellent burger joint located in the Chicago suburbs.  Paradise Pup cooks their patty until there is just the right amount of char on the outside while still being juicy and red on the inside.  Charring a burger perfectly adds a unique flavor that enhances the flavor profile and requires lots of cooking experience and care.  I recommend their cheddar burger.

DMK Burger Bar.  2954 North Sheffield Avenue, Lakeview, between Oakdale Avenue & Wellington Avenue, Chicago.  Burgers made with grass fed, antibiotic-free meat.  Unique sides include chili rubbed onion strings, fried okra & dill pickles, or fries with various toppings like Parmesan cheese & truffle cream, cheddar cheese & scallions, blue cheese & bacon, lemon tabasco aioli, and more.
